Footnotes and Endnotes are the bread and butter of scholarly work. That doesn't mean, of course that you should have just bread and butter. Mellel's feature-rich footnoting offers much-much more than that..

- Plan ahead of time: With Mellel you can create a detailed design for any project, planning everything in advance: You can use Mellel's powerful style-sets and templates to create all the styles, headings, captions, footnotes, and so on and keep them consistent throughout your project
- Organise as you go: If you prefer to organise things while working—no problem here either. Mellel will keep the consistency for you: Just add the style or setting, and all the documents in your project will follow suit.
- Do it all later: Even if you completely neglected organising your document while working with them, you can fix it all later. Mellel's powerful Find and Replace and Replace Styles option will fix everything at any point.
Working with citations and bibliography is an essential part of your work, and Mellel does an excellent job supporting this option. Mellel integrates with two leading bibliography management software, Bookends by Sonny Software and Sente by Third Street Software, and also works well with other software such as EndNote.
- Citations in Document: Lists all the citations in the document in a special palette
- Scan and re-scan: Allows you to scan the document to create the final manuscript with bibliography and final form citations
- Switch and enter citations: A two clicks method to enter a citation from a bibliography database directly into Mellel
- Find in bibliography database: allows you to jump directly to a bibliography software to find a citation
- Manual entry and conversion: You can enter citations manually (i.e., without relying on a bibliography software) and convert any manuscript with existing citations into Mellel-style citations
Although Mellel's integration with bibliography software is already extensive, there are plenty of improvements planned for the near future, which will position Mellel as the clear leader in this area.
Mellel's unique outline tool allows you to easily view, navigate and edit your document. The outline pane displays a 'skeleton' outline of all the chapters, headings, tables, figures, etc. in your document alongside the document content, allowing you to edit the content and the structure of your document at the same time.
- Auto-outline: The outline is automatically created as you go along whenever you add an auto-title to the document
- Separate or combined view for structure and special tags: You can view the document structure with special tags (such as figure or table captions) or display those separately
- Easy editing: Promote, demote, move, copy or delete any outline item easily.
- Different display: You can have the outline contain different information than the heading in the document (e.g., show titles in the outline, but just numbering in the document)
Mellel's outline tool is powerful tool for long document editing and navigation. In the near future, we intend to further enhance some options to make it a better tool for traditional outlining tasks as well.
Mellel is the leading multilingual word processor for Mac OS X in terms of the breadth and the depth of the support it provides. With some languages, it's the only real option. With others, it is simply better. If right-to-left languages, or languages related to biblical studies are important to your work, Mellel is probably what you need.
- Arabic, Persian, and Arabic languages: Mellel's support here far exceeds anything else offered for Mac OS X.
- Hebrew: Mellel is the only language to fully support writing in Hebrew, including correct pointing and trope marks.
- Syriac: Mellel is the only word processor to fully support writing in Syriac.

Mellel is open to the world, both internally and externally. It supports standards, supports them openly, and handles the support itself, so any required adjustment can be easily made.
- XML: Mellel's native format is based on the XML standard (from v. 2.1). It's open, documented and free, so anyone can use and convert it
- RTF and .doc: MS Word compatibility is a necessity. With our extensive RTF support we try to make it as painless as possible
- Unicode: Mellel is fully unicode compliant, but also supports several older encoding formats some of you may still be using.
- Plain Text: Mellel's XML format ensures that all documents will be accessible also as plain text files, freeing you from any fear of being tied to a propriety format
- OpenType: Mellel supports the OpenType font standard, allowing you better multilingual support and compatibility with Windows
