RedleX have released Mellel 1.6, a major updated to its advanced word processor. The main new features in this updates is full support for input Arabic and Farsi (Persian). Mellel is the first and only Mac OS X application to offer true support for Arabic and Persian under Mac OS X. Other major new features in this release are a redesigned user interface, magnetic palettes, extended support for CJK languages, added support for more than 10 additional languages, three new tab types, show/hide invisible characters and page elements and dozens of small enhancements.

New Mellel 1.6 features in detail:

• Arabic and Farsi (Persian) support: Mellel 1.6 is the first Mac OS X to fully support input in Arabic and Farsi (Persian). The support includes writing from right to left, contextualisation (characters change their shape depending on their position within a word), page numbering and note numbering using Arabic and Farsi numbering, special import and export encodings, Arabic punctuation export and number flipping when importing old Mac OS Arabic and Farsi document.
• Redesigned interface: following requests from users Mellel now offers a slimmer, better looking interface with numerous new customisation options for the display of elements like page margins, table lines, header and footer frames, and more.
• Magnetic Palettes: This feature was shamelessly adapted from Adobe Photoshop, only it works much better. Palettes can be magnetised to one another to form multi-palettes and can be arranged and re-arranged in a multitude of ways.
• Tabs: Mellel offers 3 new types of tabs: right tab, centre tab and decimal tab. With the last you can also set the decimal Align On character (usually a comma or a period).
• Show hidden characters: This option allows you to toggle the display of hidden characters like space, paragraph and line breaks, page breaks and tabs.
• Enhanced CJK language support: Mellel now offers a much more extensive CJK language support including Secondary font script (allows to fluently mix CJK and Roman/Other scripts), correct word breaking support for Japanese, surrogate support, and more.
• Extended language support: Mellel now offers the most comprehensive multilingual support on Mac OS X, including support for writing from right to left in languages such as Thaana and Syriac (in addition to the the support for writing in Hebrew, Arabic and Persian), surrogate support for a multitude of languages in this Unicode range (10000+), Support for Etruscan, including boustrophedon text (a first among word processors ever), UTF-8 import and export, Code2001, SIL fonts and Titus Cyberbit support (including fixes to their various quirks).
• And even more extensive Hebrew support: Mellel now offers support for Old Hebrew fonts from Mac OS 7 onwards (the first and only word processor on Mac OS X to support those fonts), support for "private" Hebrew ligatures and support for all Hebrew ligatures.
• And more: Mellel offers a host of small enhancements including a Go To Page option; document defaults for setting page margins, binding direction, default styles, and more; shortcuts for zooming in and out; improved table palette, improved table selection display, 20 percent faster work with long paragraphs, improved word count, and more.
