RedleX have released Mellel 1.6.5, a major updated to the most advanced multi-lingual word processor for Mac OS X. The most important feature in this update is the inclusion of an RTF Reader engine -- the first of its kind written specifically for Mac OS X -- that significantly enhances RTF document import support. Other new features in this release includes an innovative document variables mechanism, a flexible Typographer’s Quotes option, Soft Hyphens, Greek numbering (another first on Mac OS X), and much more.

New Mellel 1.6.5 features in detail:

• RTF Import: Mellel introduces the first RTF Reader engine written specifically for Mac OS X. All currently available RTF conversion (reader) solutions for Mac OS X are either based on OS X very limited RTF support or dated open source and propriety solutions. All those convertors are inherently limited in either their abilities or their expandability. Mellel’s RTF reader is totally new, totally expandable and within the next few months will extend to support RTF in full.

  Written in the span of a month, Mellel’s RTF reader already supports the full range of character attributes (font, font face, size, colour, etc), paragraph attributes (tabs, spacing, direction, space before/after a paragraph, etc.), tables, footnotes and endnotes, non-Unicode RTF, font matching (e.g., matching a Windows only font with a suitable Mac font), Typographer’s Quotes, and much more. and much more. Mellel’s reader supports RTF generated by MS Word (X and Win), TextEdit, Papyrus, Mariner Write and other text editors.

• Document variables: A unique option allowing you to enter up to 20 user definable variables into a document, header of footer. With document variables you can separate document design and content, and re-use a document efficiently. This option is similar to the “Fields” option in MS Word, but is unique in that that it actually works.
• Typographer’s Quotes (AKA curly quotes, smart quotes): Mellel 1.6.5 offers the most powerful and flexible implementation of Typographer’s Quotes on Mac OS X. True to its multi-lingual approach Mellel offers no less than 36 different quotation formats supporting a multitude of languages. The implementation of this option is also very flexible, offering an option to customise quotation marks, include multiple characters as quote mark, and an easy method to override Typographer’s Quotes when the need arises.
• Greek numbering scheme: allowing you to enter a Greek numbering as page number or as note number.
• Soft Hyphen (discretionary hyphen): allowing you to enter a hidden (discretionary) hyphen in a word to indicate a hyphenation point.
• Convert Text to Table option: allowing you to easily convert a tab delimited text imported or pasted from another application to a table.
• Total Number of Pages variable: allowing you to enter an updating variable of the total number of pages in a document inside a header or a footer.
• And more: Mellel 1.6.5 includes a host of small and not-so-small improvements including the addition of a “Space” section to the Insert menu (no-break space marks, zero and thin space, em and en space, thin space, and more), New Document icons (for Mellel, Mellel RTF, Mellel Text), Support for ff, fi, fl, ffi, ffl ligatures, Option+Tab to enter a tab in a table cell, and more.
