Mellel 1.7, the new version of the advanced word processor for Mac OS X revolutionises creation and editing of auto-numbers and table of contents, and greatly enhances support for CJK languages and Arabic.

RedleX have released Mellel 1.7, a major update to its advanced multi-lingual word processor for Mac OS X. This release offers a new and innovative auto-numbering, table of contents and mentions tool that exceeds any comparable tool in other word processors. This version also offers correct full justification for CJK, Kashida (Arabic full justification) support and numerous smaller enhancements and improvements.

New Mellel 1.7 features in detail:

• Auto-numbering: This breakthrough new feature allows you to enter auto-numbers into a document to number items throughout the document, structure your document (mark where every segment of the document begins, create a table of contents based on the auto-numbers, and more. The revolutionary aspect of this feature lies in the fact that the auto-numbers are not just text with a "heading" style but a special object you can use and manipulate in many ways. For example, Auto-numbers entered can be used to display the document as an outline, generate a table of contents, reference in the header or footer, and much more.
• Table of Contents: Based on auto-numbers entered into the document you can generate and re-generate a table of contents in a matter of seconds. You don't need to be an expert -- using one of the built in formats the TOC is automatically generate -- but if you want to create a professionally looking TOC, the options offered by Mellel's TOC tool far exceed those of any other word processor in the market.
• Numbering flow editing: Mellel offers a flexible and powerful way to edit your auto-numbers format using pre-defined elements like Title, Free Text, Variable, Tab and reference to auto-numbering flows (levels). This unparalleled editing tool allows you to format your auto-number freely, customise existing setups and create new ones (as opposed to the 8 only limitation in MS Word), and more.
• Unlimited number of Caption options: As part of its auto-numbering options Mellel offers the option to create an unlimited number of "caption flows" for charts, figures, images, and so on. Each of those caption flows can be included in the table of contents, as a separate TOC section.
• Mentions (header/footer reference): This innovative options revives an old book editors favourite: an option to automatically reference to the content of a page in the header or footer. For example, you can set your document so that the header on an even page will reference the chapter's name while the odd page will reference the currently discussed sub-heading.
• CJK full justification: When writing in Chinese, Japanese or Korean, or a mix of several languages including one of those, Mellel will justify CJK text correctly by extending the spacing between the characters used. The justification offers some improvements over the default implementation with Panther.
• Kashida Support: Mellel 1.7 offers correct Arabic/Persian justification support using Kashida. The option can be turned on or off as part of the character style or individually for any character in the text. Mellel is the first and currently the only Mac OS X native application to support this option.
• Set header/footer height: This option allows you to set the height of the header or footer in any measurement units: inches, centimetres, or points.
• Ligatures on/off option: you can now turn on and off the ligatures option. This mainly benefits users of monospaced fonts like Courier who do not want the fonts to use ligatures like fi or fl.
• Speedier RTF reading: a vastly improved RTF reader/writer is expected in Mellel 1.7.1. This version offers a short preview with a much speedier RTF reading speed (up to 7 times faster in some cases) and a progress bar.
• Automatic measurement unit conversion: You can now enter measurements in any measurement unit, regardless of the unit used in the preferences.
• Apply to range: This option allows you to apply a page style or a modification of a page style to a selected range of pages.
• Improved large fonts handling: Mellel now uses a method which significantly improve opening times and typing performance when using extra-large fonts like CJK fonts and multi-lingual fonts.
• Private range enabling: Removed the block of most Private Range characters. This enables better access to all characters in several (mainly larger) fonts.
• Toggle palette state: is now saved to the preferences.
• Greek localisation
• Serbian localisation
• And updated localisations for Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish
