Mellel 3.5 is Here

Mellel 3.5 is here!

The new version of mellel mac word processor features quite a few interesting new features (see below, or see the full list here).  You can download Mellel from here (or a direct link to download, here).

  • Text boxes: You an now add smart text boxes into Mellel, controlling every aspect of them via a handy pop-over. You can set a text box width and height of a text box, set the padding, the fill colour and transparency, frame type, and colour and corner radius
  • Styling within text boxes: You can style text in text boxes, including paragraph and character attributes and styles, lists and so on
  • Inline and floating boxes: Text boxes can float or be anchored to a position in the text (inline). You can also flow text around text boxes
  • Fitting text boxes width and Height: Make boxes wider or taller to fit the text within it properly
  • Smart Snap for text boxes: you can align text boxes to images, to other text boxes, to the page and writing area centre and edges
  • Smart Snap for images: you can align images to text boxes, to other images, to the page and writing area centre and edges
  • Corner radius for images: allowing you to have the round rect you’ve always pined for
  • Dashed image frames: you can now set the frame to have dashes, dots, etc. as the frame type
  • Free Weight: You can now edit the Weight of lines (in notes, columns, images, text boxes, etc.) using either set measurements (hairline to 5pt) or setting any other value you’d like to have there
  • Various Improvements: Mellel can now put raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens… OK, not really, but there are numerous under the hood and over the counter improvements making the Mellel experience much smoother
  • Fixed Bugs: many, many bugs were securely removed from Mellel, making Mellel more bug-free then ever (if you really miss bugs, you can still find them in other applications, though)

Shouldn’t something be said about udates for the iPad rendition? Do iOS clients need to continue paying like clockwork? … appears somewhat expensive to me.

What about udates for the iPad version? Do iOS users have to keep paying every 2 years? … seems a bit pricey to me.

  3. We have not decided on that – but the answer is: probably NOT.

The situation is like this: We cannot charge users (even if we want to, and even if they way to) for upgrades, so there are two realistic options we have: a) not to charge at all; b) allow you to keep your current version, and introduce a new version (which will inevitably be all-over-again. Right now, as per the iPad version, we do not think that the improvements justify paying every two years (or paying more at all), so option a is probably the option we’ll go with for the time being.

    >>But before we get into all this: Mellel was always an upgrade product. That is, when you’ve purchased it, you got a license that allowed you to update Mellel for free for a limited time (in most cases, two years). In 2011, we’ve decided to change course, and for a while offered lifetime upgrades. We now believe this was a mistake, that did not benefit you, Mellel users, and did not benefit us. We intend to change course and re-install a for-pay upgrade policy. A for-pay Upgrade policy is fairly simple: when you purchase Mellel, or if you’ve already purchased Mellel, your time-stamped license will allow you to get free updates for two years. Beyond that, you’ll be able to keep your copy of Mellel and use it (and download fresh copies of that version) but to get to the latest version and two more years of free updates you’ll need to pay an upgrade fee.<> for a while offered lifetime upgrades. We now believe this was a mistake, that did not benefit you, Mellel users, and did not benefit us.,,
“We” may think so, but this is NOT the fault of those who have been using the software and purchased it in good faith
    >> for a while offered lifetime upgrades>did not benefit you, Mellel users, <<
Explain how this is the case; NO user, as far as I can tell, has complained about this

I don’t understand how to use the new text box feature with figures. For some reason the auto titles are greyed out if the cursor is placed in a text box meaning there is no way to use auto titles for figures. So no auto numbering and no listing of figures in the TOC. I don’t get why auto titles are excluded from the text boxes. If you want captures you still have to do work arounds like in the first version of Mellel. Sad.

  7. We’re gonna overhaul the entire captioning business soon, and that will also include TextBoxes. Right now, it is a limitation, I’m afraid.

The new version doesn’t work properly. Especially with tables it’s a mess, the selection stops working after a while.

  9. We’re on that already (the selection with the tables needs fixing. Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks for implementing text boxes in this new version of Mellel, as it is one I have been eagerly awaiting, as I can now use Mellel to write my grant proposals. TY!

More power to you in moving Mellel forward. I have been a user for years, on a fairly basic level, and have also worked professionally with the high-end Adobe products, as well as Microsoft products.

Have you considered having two separate products, lower end and higher end, with a way to upgrade from one to the other? This is what Finale does with music software, except they have four products, from simple to full featured. The lower end basic product would have free “maintenance” upgrades, to keep it functioning as platforms change and with minor fixes. The higher end product would have more robust features, and there would be a cost for substantial upgrades. Just a thought.

  13. We have considered this (and, in fact, are offering on the Mac App Store a Mellel Lite). To put it plainly, the problem is twofold: one is how to really create good “grading” (i.e., what to take out of the basic product), and two is how to differentiate the products in terms of price. Mellel is fairly cheap for what it can do, so there’s very little wiggle room for us there. As for “grading”: what do one takes out? We would not want to harm users’ ability to create long documents, or use auto-titles, or footnotes or limit the length of the document – where would you create the “grading”? Tough question.
