Overview

This is the fifth tutorial in the Writing your Document series. Previous tutorials in this series cover different tools you can use to write your documents, but you don't have to complete this tutorial series in any particular order.

In this tutorial you will learn all about using hyperlinks in your documents:

  • Insert Hyperlinks
  • Edit Hyperlinks
  • Adjust Hyperlinks Display
  • Importing and Exporting Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks in Mellel are textual objects within your document that can be linked to external web sites, e-mail addresses or files.

  6. Type Mellel's Web Site in the Display Text text box.
  7. Type http://www.mellel.com in the URL text box.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click the hyperlink to navigate to Mellel's web site.

  6. Click OK.
  7. Click the hyperlink to send an e-mail to Mellel's support team.

Adjust Hyperlinks Display

By default, Mellel displays hyperlinks in blue underlined font, but you can change this either globally or specifically for individual hyperlinks:

  1. Double-click the hyperlink you created.
  2. Uncheck the Display As link checkbox.
  3. Click OK.

Note that the hyperlink is now displayed as regular text, but you can still click it to generate the e-mail.

Or, if you want to change the global preferences for displaying hyperlinks:

  1. Choose Mellel > Preferences from the menu bar.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Use the Hyperlink color popup menu to choose Custom.
  4. Click the adjacent Color well ().

    The Color window is displayed.

  5. Click the Color Palettes tab ().
  6. Choose Red.

Note the hyperlinks are now displayed in this new color.

Importing and Exporting Hyperlinks

When pasting text with hyperlinks from an external source, Mellel keeps the hyperlinks functionality:

  1. Copy this sentence (including this link) and paste it in Mellel.

  2. Click the hyperlink in Mellel to make sure it is properly working.

When exporting Mellel documents to PDF, RTF or Word format, hyperlinks are exported with the text and will maintain their function in the exported document:

  1. Choose File > Export > PDF from the menu bar.
  2. Choose a location and a file name for the exported file.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Open the exported file.
  5. Scroll down to the Hyperlinks title.
  6. Click the links to verify that they are working.

When exporting text with links to plain text files, you can determine how hyperlinks will be handled:

  1. Choose File > Export > Plain Text from the menu bar.
  2. Choose a location and a file name for the exported file.
  3. Check the Include URL with Hyperlinks checkbox.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open the exported file.
  6. Scroll down to the Hyperlinks title.

Note that the URL is added in parenthesis following the hyperlinks display text.
